WAGO: industrial-strength automation for the building sector

Wago has made a successful entry into the building automation sector in France. It did this by retaining three major advantages that account for its strong reputation in the industrial sphere: strength, openness and modularity.

Its flagship product is the WAGO PLC, made up of a central unit integrating all the open protocols. This PLC is programmed using open, independent software called “CODESYS”.

CODESYS has the benefit of a developer community and function libraries available to users.

WAGO PLCs support:

1. Development: Access to a PC-based development environment to build software applications or integrate existing ones in libraries;

2. Configuration: Application configuration via PLC / local equipment can be performed operationally day-to-day or via open APIs;

3. Supervision: Supervision and error and alarm management blocks with individual display show controller, network and wiring status.

These functions are accessible via a server or a mobile application, either locally or via the cloud.

I/O modules can be connected to this central entity, which serves as an interface for connecting sensors from different sources and PLC concentrators.

These PLCs can use several protocols: BACNET, KNX, DALI, LON, SMI, MODBUS, ENOCEAN, DMX, etc. They may also be connected to a wide variety of local sensors and equipment.

For the service sector, WAGO has created a range of comfort PLCs, derived from their conventional PLCs and easily modulated by area. The flexROOM series, for example, controls lighting, blinds and temperature with no need for programming since the PLCs are pre-loaded with generic programmes. These advantages include:

  • Easy zoning and partitioning
  • Simple configuration rather than programming
  • Data reporting and modern Web display
