SIEMENS goes digital!
SIEMENS is a German industrial giant. In the building industry, we are familiar with it in fire safety and to some extent in BAS systems. Its image, to us, is that of a group highly focused on its products and not by nature open to new technologies. However, Siemens is making a real effort to take them on board.
SIEMENS invited VINCI Energies Innovation Director Lydia BABACI-VICTOR and the brand directors to Munich on 22 June for a presentation of the SIEMENS digitalisation and new technology strategy.
These innovation topics are supported by a dedicated department set up to work with the business departments. IT developers and artificial intelligence experts do not claim to have business knowledge. Information technology utilisation is supported by the business departments, as is the collected data on which learning is based (which naturally come from the field). Artificial intelligence consists primarily in teaching a machine to make choices based on known samples. Data must therefore be collected, described and classified. This is the job of the business departments. The digital experts, for their part, break down the analytical processes, determine the success criteria for a machine decision and work out the solutions in detail. The combination of digital know-how and business knowledge generates the most effective implementations.
In this spirit, SIEMENS has created MindSphere, a Data Management cloud platform dedicated to industrial IoT.
MindSphere will store the data to be used by artificial intelligence engines. 80,000 buildings have already been connected and are reporting data such as consumption information, which is used to identify relevant consumption ratios, detect discrepancies or incidents and sound alarms.
Another advantage of the programme is that SIEMENS has opted for openness. For example: the digital experts do not demand to work on SIEMENS BAS systems, particularly in France, where SCHNEIDER has a dominant position. Openness, IP and transparency are the core precepts of the SBA (Smart Building Alliance).
This SIEMENS offer has not been completely finalised (ACTEMIUM has tested the MindSphere invoicing system and found it not yet fully operational) but the system set up is powerful and original.
