Generative design: a practical application of artificial intelligence
Generative design combines powerful cloud computing and artificial intelligence algorithms to support engineers as during the structure design process.
Generative design is used in Building Solutions activities. Design is, by nature, iterative. With state-of-the-art generative design concepts, we are able to test the various options under consideration in record time to optimise our facilities, integrate them in a building, and work out the best solution.
UXELLO has integrated the AI (Artificial Intelligence) programme set up within Leonard to deliver a new process for designing active fire protection systems: SPRINK IA, overseen by Stéphane Maviel (Pôle Nord Est Sécurité Incendie).
Principle
The objective of generative design is to optimise sprinkler distribution and location by factoring in a large number of parameters, including applicable regulations and structural constraints.
Benefits
In the bidding phase: very fast critical analysis of the baseline solution shown in the tender documents, and better bid positioning.
In the construction survey phase: supply streamlining, particularly pipe sizes and sprinkler numbers
In the execution phase: artificial intelligence used to minimise the differences between pipe sections and standardise pipe production, saving both time and materials.
BIM compatible
SPRINK IA, currently used with conventional drafting tools such as AUTOCAD, can be easily adapted to BIM software; artificial intelligence is particularly well suited to the object approach that underpins the BIM method.
Next up: DIANE, the new BU dedicated to digital development
In an extension of SPRINK IA, a new BU will be set up: DIANE (Digital et Intelligence Artificielle pour Nos Entreprises – digital technologies and Artificial Intelligence for our business units).
Its skills development goals are: acculturation, support, and rollout.
Its design production goals are: co-designing, development, and training.
