Data center: cable grommet boxes to save energy

Operating 24/7, data centers consume very large amounts of energy. In addition to supplying all IT systems, electricity is needed to provide air conditioning to offset the heat emitted by patch bays.

Current situation

Cooled air is blown into the volume formed by a false floor and then channelled through perforated slabs close to the hot points.

To control the air conditioning system, air from the false floor must be channelled only through the perforated slabs, which are positioned at the places requiring cooling.

Problem: How can air be prevented from flowing through cable openings? So far, it has been allowed to flow around the cables. This partly reduces the air conditioning system’s efficiency.

A solution suggested by Cegelec Angers Data Center

Cegelec Angers Data Center had the idea of creating an aluminium plate that can be set in the false floor to allow the passage of cables.

The plate is fitted with elastic elements that close around the cables and thus provide sufficient air tightness to sharply reduce the unwanted passage of cool air.

The first results are spectacular: over a period of one year, the grommets can generate savings of up to €700,000!
