Installation of electric vehicle charging points at the European Parliament

The chauffeur service at the European Parliament has a fleet of electric (Audi e-tron) cars to bring MEPs from the airport or the station in Strasbourg to the Parliament. Drivers need to be able to bring the cars back up to 80% charge within 15 minutes, which is why the client asked its supplier ABB, in partnership with Santerne Alsace, to install new charging points offering dynamic load balancing.

Dynamic load balancing allows one charging point to receive power from another charging point for a combined power of 320 kW to 350 kW. The charging points can act as master chargers or slave chargers.

The fire risk is low for two reasons: the charging points are outdoors and the power units are located in an air-conditioned room monitored by a fire detection system.

Another special feature of the system is that each charging point is equipped with a cooling unit that circulates coolant along the charging cable, thus lowering the temperature of the charging point with dynamic load balancing.

Since the charging points were installed in Strasbourg in early July, Luxembourg followed suit, implementing the exact same setup.
