First BREEAM Outstanding Reference in Romania

TIAB HVAC is a subsidiary of TIAB Romania specialising in mechanical engineering projects. Thanks to its integrated design office, the company is able to participate in many complex projects at the national level.

A unique opportunity

In 2016, TIAB HVAC became aware of a call for tender for the HVAC batch of a new Lidl Group superstore and office building in Bucharest. This presented an opportunity because the project was aiming for Romania’s first-ever BREEAM Oustanding certification.

Built by the general contractor Skanska, the superstore was designed to set a new standard in terms of sustainability. For example, 1,200 square metres of photovoltaic panels on the roof provide more than 50% of the building’s energy, and the installation of a rainwater tank made it possible to reduce drinking water consumption by over 73%.

As Alexandru Cristea, Director of TIAB HVAC, explains: “The chance to be part of obtaining the highest environmental certification for a building in Romania was a golden opportunity for us! We put everything into winning the contract, by promoting our safety culture and technical expertise, and by offering innovative solutions that had been proven in the industrial environment.”

This won the customer over, and the works began in April 2016.

Services provided

TIAB HVAC carried out complex mechanical works where the proven engineering skills and capabilities of the BU were able to solve complex technical challenges in the critical stages of the project, thus achieving:

  • First reference of a hybrid R290 heat pump
  • Chilled water production plant with a GWP<10
  • Class C ventilation system

A complex project

Located in a conurbation, the restricted worksite posed logistical problems in bringing materials to the site.

Another challenge was that TIAB HVAC was installing state-of-the-art equipment, such as the R290 heat pump. This technology required special drilling in a confined space, with painstaking engineering work needed to ensure airtightness and meet pressure requirements.

A new standard

This strategical impact project after three years from the mechanical completion in 2017 obtained in 2020 the highest-ranking position in the BREEAM Outstanding evaluation procedure, 99.1% scoring point. This project represents for the client Lidl the highest BREEAM rating in Romania and within the LIDL’s portfolio worldwide.

This is an important milestone For TIAB HVAC and tangible proof of its ability to work on high value-added sustainable development projects.
