Cegelec Belgium helps build Wallonia’s largest hospital

Based in Gosselies, Cegelec Belgium’s teams specialise in technical installation projects for the hospital sector. Their recognised expertise has enabled them to win numerous contracts with hospitals in Liège, Brussels (CHIREC Delta) and Flanders (AZ Delta). With the Grand Hôpital de Charleroi, Cegelec Belgium is passing a new milestone in helping to build the region’s largest hospital.

The private hospital network Grand Hôpital de Charleroi (GHdC) currently incorporates five locations: Sainte-Thérèse, Saint-Joseph, Notre-Dame, Reine Fabiola and the IMTR. As part of its hospital reform plan, the Belgian government wants to amalgamate these five specialist centres on the Les Viviers site in Gilly.

The construction firms Franki and Jan de Nul will lead this major project to create a brand-new hospital, accommodating more than 4,500 healthcare professionals across its 145,000 square metres. It will provide 1,000 beds and 29 operating theatres, including a serious burns unit.

In spring 2020, Cegelec Belgium was part of a consortium that submitted a bid for the HVAC, electrical systems (power supply and ELV) and plumbing batches. Thanks to its meticulous preparation, competitive pricing and excellent references, Cegelec won every technical batch it was involved in. Success on a grand scale!

“An operation of this size in three-and-a-half years is a real challenge! We’ll need all our teams and all our energy.” explains Benoit Gouverneur, Business Development Manager at Cegelec Belgium.

The works will include several buildings:

  • “Hot Floor” building, including a high-level medical technology hub, operating theatres and intensive care unit
  • “Factory” building, containing laboratories for analysis and sterilisation
  • “Motel” building for short-term patients
  • “Hotel” building for longer-term patients

The design phase is already under way, with works expected to begin in spring 2021. Delivery is scheduled for 6 June 2024.

Architecture and special techniques consultants: VK Architects & Engineers in association with Réservoir A.

Total value for Cegelec Belgium: €31.5 million (€14.5M for HVAC, €12M for electrical systems and €5M for sanitation).
